Have you got stubborn legs that just don’t seem

Have you got stubborn legs that just don’t seem to get any higher no matter how much you stretch? Annoying…right?😡😡Well not for much longer!…

Many dancers have been led to believe that the quads or hamstrings are responsible for lifting our leg in développés, however the main player behind the movement is actually the iliopsoas, which is more commonly known as the hip flexor💪💪.

This is because we use our hip flexors for hip flexion, which is the lifting of our legs above 90 degrees!

The exercise above is known as a hip flexor pulse, and they’re great for strengthening the hip flexor in the à la seconde position through the 90⁰ range of motion…

This exercise also mimics the middle section of our leg extension (the part where we lift our leg to attitude from a retiré position), which if done properly by keeping our hips square and legs turned out, will really help to prepare the iliopsoas for execution of full développé à la seconde.

Give this one a go and prepare for your développés to soar✈️✈️!!!

When we bend our back backwards, our spine needs help. Guess who comes to the rescue? It’s the deep core muscles – the transversus abdominis, the obliques and the pelvic floor muscles💪💪.

As we bend back, these muscles squeeze and stretch at the same time, performing what is known as an eccentric contraction💪💪.

Why does this matter? Well, when we strengthen these muscles strong, the help our backs to stay strong, supported and stable, allowing us to lift our chests during arabesque to achieve those gorgeous lines🤩⭐️✨!!!

Okay bunheads… now this may sound a weeny bit controversial at first, but the best secrets usually are!!🤫🤫👇👇

This tip is especially beneficial if you keep falling out of your turns, and it actually has something to do with our BREATHING💨…

The next time you prep to pirouette (or go to balance in general), I want you to EXHALE whilst visualising your BELLY BUTTON being pulled in towards your SPINE🩻.

Now… I’m guessing that when you try to balance you usually hold your breath??? Don’t worry! Inhaling during a balance is a totally natural and instinctive thing to do, however it doesn’t actually work that well…

When we EXHALE, we create something known as INTRA-ABDOMINAL PRESSURE which ACTIVATES the DEEP CORE and SPINAL muscles!

As we know, we use these muscles to stabilise ourselves… hence the improved balance during our turns!

Exhaling as you relevé to turn will almost definitely feel very unnatural and ineffective at first! However, DON’T GIVE UP and keep working on the coordination of executing this exhalation as you relevé in your prep to turn as I have a strong feeling it will really help your pirouettes🩰🩰!!

POV: Getting your oversplits is your 2024 goal✨… Let me help you👇👇👇

Let me tell you a secret… simply stretching is NOT the most effective way to improve flexibility😱…

What you actually need to be doing is tricking your nervous system into allowing you to be flexible!!!

This comes from strength training our muscles in their end range of motion (when they’re flexed or stretched out)💪💪

When we do this, the improved strength the muscle has in that extended position makes the nervous belief that this level of flexibility is safe, meaning that it will then allow us to go further into the stretch!

Hamstring flexibility is super important for oversplits, and I recommend Swiss ball hamstring curls as a great exercise for strength training your hammies in their end range of motion!

Can’t get your leg above 90 degrees in your arabesque🤔??? Don’t miss out on this science-backed secret👩‍🔬🤫…

Contrary to popular belief, the height of our back leg in arabesque is actually down to our glutes and hamstrings (rather than our lower back)💪💪…

That’s because our glutes and hammies are part of a group of muscles known as the hip extensors, which are responsible for lifting our legs up to the back (just like when we arabesque or grand battement derriere)!

Thats means that strengthening the glutes and hamstrings will really help your working leg to soar during adage✈️!

Some of my favourite exercises to strengthen the hip extensors are…

-Glute bridges
-Bird dogs
-Swiss ball hamstring curls
-Deadlifts

Tip #2 to help you improve your pirouettes is all about turning en dehors from a smaller 4th position🩰…

When you relevé to turn, we shift our centre of mass from somewhere in the middle of our two feet in 4th position, to directly above the foot we’re turning on…

This shift in our centre of mass can cause us to lose balance and fall out of the turn. Therefore, we need to make the shift as teeny as possible to reduce the possibility of this happening👍!

When we turn from a small 4th position, our centre of mass is already very close to being over our front foot (the foot we are going to turn on)…

This reduces the distance we have to shift our centre of mass to get it over the foot we’re turning on, helping us to stay on balance😁!

Bunheads, if you want to turn harder and faster (and get more rotations) then you need to make yourself more AERODYNAMIC💨💨💨!

Sooo… you’re not a super streamlined racing car 🏎️, but did you know that changing your arm position as you prepare to pirouette can help you too to slice through the air???

Instead of preparing to turn with your arms in a rounded third position, try turning from the arabesque style third…

Doing this will help you to cut through the air with your leading arm, which makes you turn faster because the side of your hand comes into contact with the less air particles (also known as air resistance/friction which slows you down) than the back of your hand would✋!

Petit allegro looking like a HOT MESS🔥🙈??? Try this tip👇👇👇

Petit allegro combinations tend to be tricky because they’re made up of so many intricate steps that happen very quickly💨…

Before taking on the whole enchainment, break it down and work on performing each individual step slowly and precisely. Once you have mastered the step on its own, work on building up your speed before you add it back into the combination💪!

As you continue to practice each step and slowly build up speed, the movements will become easier to execute and will almost feel like ‘second nature’.

This is because when you practice something over and over again you develop muscle memory, which is your muscles’ ability to perform movements more precisely over time because you have practiced them so much🧠🧠!!!

Over nervous system is the key player behind muscle memory, which occurs when the brain and nervous system form strong connections known as adaptations, as a result of us performing the same movement over and over again.

Our nervous system then uses these stored adaptations to tell our muscles what to do. This happens automatically, and because our brain is no longer trying to communicate HOW to perform a specific movement to our muscles (because this information is already stored), the movement tends to be much more precise✅!

For this technique tip, I want you take yourself back to your childhood when you were riding down the street on your scooter🛴…

Do you remember what used to happen if you took the corner too fast??? Of course you do! Those grazed arms and knees are hard to forget🤕🥴!!!

Unfortunately, the exact same thing happens if you take the corner of your manège too quickly, and therefore we need to slow ourselves down and hold the reins as we go round those corners🏇!

For all of you car drivers out there, we always slow down and move into 2nd gear when we turn round a corner, and thats the exact same thing you need to be doing as you take the corner of your manège🚗⛔️!

Big toe circles / figures of 8 are a great way of improving circulation to the METATARSOPHALANGEAL JOINT (otherwise known as your BUNION)!

As with most other areas of the body, increasing circulation will help to reduce pain and stiffness in the bunion region!

Remember to be very gentle when moving your toes! If the area is already inflamed, being too heavy-handed is only going to make the problem worse!

That’s right! They all dance with gorgeous artistry🎨🖌️…

In ballet, artistry refers to the expression and emotion conveyed by a dancer through their movements. Although the perfect technique is obviously important, it is a dancer’s artistry which draws the eye of the audience and elevates that dancer to the next level.

To improve your artistry so that you too can stand out from the crowd, always keep moving until the very last millisecond of the music🎶…

This means making the final port de bras last FOREVER, and really using your epaulement to fill out those final counts with grace and poise🦢!!

Not only does this avoid standing like a lemon at the barre with nothing to do🍋, but it improves our performance quality by making it look as though we are really enjoying ourselves as we dance.

Petit allegro requires our calves to work overtime😅. Check out this exercise to BULLETPROOF YOUR CALVES💪💪…

Our calves are one of the most important muscles to strengthen for petit allegro, mainly because we contract our calf muscles -whilst simultaneously extending our ankles- at the beginning of a jump to push us into the air.

Our calves are also responsible for plantar flexion (the fancy word for pointing our feet) which helps our tootsies to look gorgeous and balletic in mid-air🦶!

In my opinion, every dancer should be doing deficit calf raises…

This is because as you lower your heel off the step, your calf is stretched to its full capacity. When you then raise your heels from this fully-stretched position, you are strengthening your calf through its full range of motion🦵🦵!!!

These super strong calves are ESSENTIAL for pumping us back into the air in quick succession do that we can achieve gorgeous, POWERFUL jumps in our petit allegro😁!

TURNS EDITION👇👇👇

I feel like EVERY DANCER has heard the phrase ‘YOUR ARMS COME FROM YOUR BACK’💪💪… but what does this actually mean, and how can it help our pirouettes???

Well, when we turn we need get our arms super stable and controlled to keep us on balance so we don’t wobble and fall out of our pirouettes…

Our LATS MUSCLES control our arms… which means that strong lats = stable arms (and therefore better pirouettes)!!!

If you don’t know whether your arms are ruining your turns, try doing a pirouette whilst holding a stable object like a ruler between your hands, or whilst squishing a pilates magic circle… if doing this helps, your lats are probably the problem!

There are LITERALLY TONS of exercises you can do to strengthen your lats muscles, however my FAVES are LATS PULLDOWNS and LATS ROWS.

Always make sure that your performing these exercises with the PROPER FORM by squeezing and engaging your lats before you begin the movement. If you dont do this, you biceps will take over which is NOT what we want if we’re looking to strengthen the lats. Gripping the lat pull down bar or resistance band (whichever you’re using) with your 4 fingers and NOT your thumb will also help to prevent your biceps from doing all the work 💪.

Although height isn’t always the aim in petit allegro, to give us enough time to execute a clean entrechat six we need to get high into the air…

If we don’t jump high enough, our beats can end up looking very sloppy and unfinished which is not what we want🥴!

When we plié (or bend our knees), our muscles store POTENTIAL ENERGY which is then released when we straighten our legs at the start of our jump…

The DEEPER we plié, the more POTENTIAL ENERGY is stored, and therefore the HIGHER (and more powerful) our jump is- giving you loads of time for clean, well executed beats😁😁!!!

Instead of turning around a giant circle, imagine that you are moving through a SQUARE!

Doing this means that as you move from corner to corner of your square, you always have a solid focus in each direction that you can use to spot (and we all know that spotting makes us less dizzy😵‍💫👀)!

The best thing about this is that when you are moving through your giant square, because you are turning at the same time, nobody will ever notice that you’re spinning round in a huge circle!!!
